Pie inspiration and pie dough play!
I thoroughly enjoyed creating this pie.
BECAUSE….just plain fun and pretty!
A bit back, I’d found a beautiful account on Instagram with beautiful food and pie. When I saw her pies topped with beautiful cut-outs and draped with lattice and leaves, I knew I wanted to give it a try.
One Tuesday, in the afternoon, everything aligned and it was THE DAY to try my pie!
It’s not hard.
It requires pie crust, some cutters and some time.
This is a delightful set of little cutters and this little set of leaves looks fun as well.
My pie crust recipe that I used for this pie is here.
My inspiration for the pie comes from The Judy Lab blog and you can hop over there to see her beautiful pies and find her pie crust recipe and tips. Her Instagram account is here and it WILL make you hungry and give you the very strong urge to grab some cutters and craft a pie! 🙂
I made triple berry filling, with it a bit heavy on the blueberries. I used my Blueberry Pie recipe from over here.
I want to make more pies!!!
I want to read up on pastry crust a bit more and try brushing it with egg whites or whatever else is recommended to give it a glossy look.
One very good trick is to start cutting extra shapes and freezing them for another time. This way you could turn out a beautiful pie pretty quickly if you want one in a short amount of time or you invite last-minute company.
Another recommendation is to freeze your shapes and place them on cold and they will hold their shape better when baking. I did stick mine in the freezer, but they weren’t all cold until I finished with my top. Next time, I think I will see about having my shapes all ready to go and put them all on directly from the freezer. I was still quite happy with how it came out.
I, of course, wanted to photograph the pie, so that meant more time until I placed the pie in the oven.
It was a very fun project.
I baked it just because I wanted to and then we ended up having last-minute company that I didn’t know about when I was making the pie. SO, my company got to be guinea pigs and were served my pretty pie.
I honestly like the flavor of a crumb topping better, but man, these shapes are just so fun!! That’s something else I want to toy with. Using a crumb topping and then just some shapes around the edges or scattered across the top.
I made a strawberry pie last week and used flowers and leaves around the edge of it.
And I added some more shapes to the freezer.
Pictures of the strawberry pie coming up soon!
Let me know if you decide to play in YOUR kitchen with pie dough! 🙂

This is absolutely adorable! I will be trying this myself next time I bake, I may even take your advice and cut out the shapes ahead of time and freeze them. That makes a lot of sense 🙂
It really is fun! I love it because it does take some time, but it’s not hard. And I love pretty things. 🙂 Have fun! Let me know if you make one and if you post pictures!
This is the PRETTIEST pie I have ever seen! I bet it tasted good too. Thank you so much for linking up to Thoughts of Home on Thursday. You make our gathering a happier place.
Thank-you so much, Laura!
It was yummy, although I really do love the taste of a crumb topping better. It’s so fun and pretty to use the shapes for the top, though. 🙂
