Good morning! We have a giveaway for……………………….
a copy of THIS book!
{Mine is an advanced reader copy so the cover isn’t quite as polished as the published edition will be.}
Parenting with Grace and Truth.
Easy to type out. Not as easy to always LIVE out. At least for this mama.
The very first page contains these words:
“We will analyze together why it is more effective to parent with truth and grace than with truth alone. For me, this shift in approach took away the burden of parenting as an obligation and turned parenting into an opportunity. It moved me from being intrusive to being inclusive.”
I read these sentences and reached for the green gelly roller pen in my nearby basket of pens and markers. Uncapping the pen, I underlined the same words I underlined above.
In life, in relationships, in business, in failings or accomplishments what draws more?
Instruction from someone who makes us feel they are set apart or set above or distant from us or someone who draws in and towards and leans in to say, “Me too. I understand. I’ve felt that way too. You aren’t alone.”
It’s the including, the grace, the understanding.
I was drawn to that sentence simply because of it.
It’s about shaping character in our children by offering love and understanding and grace, yet teaching and training in truth.
Another paragraph that found me reaching for my pen says this:
“Each child has a unique personality and will respond to your constructive criticism or praise based on his or her personal makeup. Don’t apply the same techniques or use the same words with every child.Figure out what works best for each child and adapt your style of parenting to fit that child’s needs.”
I couldn’t agree more.
That’s part of what can make parenting FEEL so tricky. You don’t ever get it down pat.
Not with all the variables and changing things like personalities and different ages and stages. AND the continued learning and seeking wisdom and learning-every-day-we-live that we ourselves are doing!!
At the end of each chapter are a few sentences titled Dan’s Reality Check and they are encouraging and real feelings and issues we can relate to. We all love ideals, but we also realize we do fall short.
The chapters also contain sections marked TRUTH and contain Scripture verses under the heading.
I’ve enjoyed the way the book is laid out and the concepts it contains.
The fifth chapter talks about different parenting styles and I always find these kind of breakdowns interesting.
I’ve said it before, but I think parenting books often have inspiration that can be applied in other areas and relationships in life.
No matter what age your children are, reading a good and encouraging book for parents helps refocus your purpose as a parent. I don’t have young children anymore, but I am still a parent. And I am around other children. Even if our children are completely grown OR we never physically birth children or adopt children, almost everyone has children in their lives whom they influence.
