I have three books to share with you today. Can you believe May is almost to leave us? I can’t. As always. 🙂 The months move so quickly and ALWAYS leave me about two months behind.
{Oh, and I planned to post this post last week…..you can hop over here and read why I didn’t……..It Happened Like This.} 🙂
Let’s look inside the 365 Trivia Twist Devotions book first! It is absolutely fun, I think. I’m sure it appeals to me because I enjoy trivia and information that perhaps isn’t that useful, but makes for interesting tidbits! Ha! And I like Bible information and trivia and Bible study. AND I like fun books for kids!
This book is dated and each page talks about something that happened on this date. Sometimes it’s something from history. Sometimes it’s a National Day. For example, August 1 is National Friendship Day, so it talks about friendship.
Each page includes an arrow labeled Also On This Day at the bottom, with a fun fact beside it. The one for National Friendship Day tells us, “This is Ice Cream Sandwich Day and in 1892 Charles A. Wheeler patented the first escalator.
Each page combines a Biblical concept and lists a Bible verse at the bottom as well.
The friendship page talks about David & Jonathan and includes 1 Samuel 18:3 ~ “Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as much as himself.”
If you homeschool, and you have a kiddo who likes this kind of thing, this book would be a great addition to your schoolbooks. If you don’t homeschool and you have a kiddo who enjoys trivia and Bible facts, this book would make a great addition to your home library! 😉 Basically, if you have anyone living in your home or anyone in your neighborhood or anyone you know who likes this type of stuff, this book would make them smile!
Please note ~ if you’re looking for an in-depth Bible study or devotional, that isn’t the design of this one. It’s simple, interesting trivia coupled with simple truths and I think it’s geared for younger kids, even though I enjoyed it. I would’ve enjoyed reading it aloud to my kiddos when they were younger. 🙂
This was a B&H/Lifeway book to review.
Next up!
I love the artwork and cover of this book. The arrows are so fun.
Each chapter has an arrow under the chapter number and begins with a quote.
{Total Aside} My focus words this year became Aspire & Aim. This made me think of an arrow and has me noticing arrows this year.
Chapter 9 is called Vigilant Prayer.
Lee Nienhuis talks about building a prayer strategy and she fleshes it out with these four categories as building blocks.
WANT TO
LEARN TO
DEVELOP IT
SCHEDULE IT
Then in Chapter 13, called Teach Them to Pray, she shares these four steps for teaching your children.
PRAISE
CONFESSION
THANKSGIVING
INTERCESSION
I appreciate that there’s always something new for me to learn too or a refresher, even when the teaching is formatted for children. And honestly? That’s often when I learn best. Through simple lessons and easy-to-understand inspiration vs. big words or hard-to-figure-out puzzles.
Each chapter of the book ends with a prayer for an area in your life or to pray over your family or to lift up your children to our Father God.
I love the forward in this book. It’s called a Word from the Author and here’s an excerpt ~
“What you hold in your hands is a gamble, truly- an act of faith on my part. I am in the throes of motherhood, so deeply buried in the trenches of everyday that I don’t dare take my eyes off my own mission. There is still ample time for my kids to fall apart. Although they are making age-appropriate decisions to follow Christ, today, tomorrow they could hit some rough patch and skid out of control. We never, ever know what a day will bring, do we? But as one of the wisest women I know once told me, ‘If you think you have motherhood figured out, one of two things could happen. You could become paranoid when it isn’t going as planned. Or you could become proud. Both of these bring displeasure to God, Lee.’ “
This book is encouraging and inspiring. I felt like Lee Nienhuis was a friend sharing her struggles, mistakes, trial-and-error, interests, aims and goals in growing herself and cultivating character in her children. Plus, in chapter 15 she mentions personality types and Myers-Briggs assessments, so score!!! 🙂
Here’s a few of the Chapter Titles ~
2. The Mama Prayer and When FEAR Sets In
6. Believe God
10. Equip Them
12. Teach Them About the Value of the Word of God
16. Teach Them to Serve
18. Cast Vision
The very back page also contains a list of Reflection Questions.
AND, for our third book, it’s the THIRD book in The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls series!
If your kiddos like Adventures in Odyssey audios or books or have read The Magic Treehouse series, I think they’ll like these. It’s somewhat the same concept. The Hidden Scrolls take them to key moments in Biblical history AND contain a mystery to solve.
~ My Outdoors Project For The Summer ~
* Water Flowerpots *
We did not plant any garden this year and so far I’m not a bit sad about it! I’ve been enjoying venturing out in the evenings and watering my flowerpots and feeling no pressure at all to worry about weeds in the garden or water in the garden. 🙂 It really has been wonderful!
Now, I know, come July, we will shed a tear or two when we have no sweet corn to gobble. But maybe we’ll just load up the Traeger with jalapeno poppers and that will assuage a few tears! Ha!
Do you have a summer reading list? Tell me what’s on it!
