For quite a while I kept tossing around the idea of painting my mismatched kitchen cupboards in our basement. They were fine, but I knew I would love the look better if I painted them all. My husband wasn’t quite sure, because he’s just not so keen on all the painted stuff that is a major part of the decor world. But he kindly and obligingly let me do my thing. {he is a little bit used to my ideas and such after seventeen years.}
After two years of living in our new-to-us house, I started in on the project. Matthew helped me get the doors off and I worked on the project a few afternoons one week. I got the doors pretty well along and the frames done and then between other things happening and my back stuff, the cupboards got put on hold.
Finally in July, with help from my guy again, I got things set up and touched up some doors and painted some that still needed done. He did some gluing and fixing here and there. Then, I let everything dry and then started getting it all back together.
We needed some new screws for some of the doors and Matthew got those for me and hung the top ones back up for me.
I was quite happy and excited to actually have this project finished. They aren’t professional or perfect and there’s a few things I’d redo if I was re-doing, but I really like having them painted and all one color. It is fun to make things more “my own” in my home and to freshen and change things.
I used chalk paint and totally love it. Chalk paint, not chalkboard paint. There is a difference! My sister uses lots of chalk paint and milk paint on her many projects.
I really wasn’t trying to match the gray of the cupboards to the gray of our basement, but it ended up matching very, very closely.
I also loved the idea of mismatched glass knobs, like my sister put on a cupboard she painted and redid.
My husband was putting a knob on a drawer for me and he wondered why the knobs didn’t match. “You couldn’t get enough knobs of all the same kind?” he asked in all seriousness and in an understanding, sympathetic way.
I howled with laughter, inside, at his question. Because, nope, I WANTED them mismatched.
He and my son were {and are} befuddled when they found out that I chose to have glass knobs that don’t match. They thought it was a little crazy and I admit, I was just a bit insulted when they voiced their opinions, and then I got over it because I love the mismatched idea and it’s ok if they think it’s a little odd and don’t understand my way of thinking. Chalk it up in part to male/female and another part personality and preference! Plus, it does make me chuckle!
Here’s a mishmash of pictures.
Some before, plus dishes and popcorn tubs waiting to be washed!
Some during the process of prepping and painting…..
And, then, the finished look!
AND my new faucet in the basement that I mentioned in this post and am still loving very, very much!

Thank-you! It was fun to get them done.
Thanks for stopping in.
This project turned out looking so much better than the original cabinets. I love your choice in color and I adore your hardware choice.

I love the hardware too! Glass knobs make me smile. 🙂
They turned out great! It’s amazing what a coat of paint can do to brighten and freshen things up. Thanks for linking up to Motivational Monday!

Paint does give such a cheery face lift for some things! Thanks for coming by!
I really like the new look you gave your cabinets.
I love them too!
Looks wonderful! We just moved into a new home and I desperately want to paint the cabinets in the study. Did you have to do any sanding or prep work before beginning to paint with the milk paint? And thanks for linking up to #MotivationMonday!

I didn’t do much prep work. {Not as much as my husband would’ve. 😉 } But I tend to be rather that way and the cupboards are in our basement/family room area, so they’re not as big a deal as if they were my main kitchen. I did do some sanding, and my husband filled some holes for me from where the old hardware was, since I was replacing the door knobs.
I also used chalk paint, not milk paint. I wanted to use chalk paint, because it doesn’t require a lot of prep work. I’ve not used milk paint and don’t know a whole lot about it.
Check out my sister’s blog, Sew a Fine Seam. She loves to paint and has done lots of stuff and she uses milk paint and chalk paint. Email her or leave a comment~she’d be glad to help you with questions!
Thanks for coming by!
Oh I LOVE it! But you knew I would! I love me some painted cabinets 🙂
And I’m ALL ABOUT the mismatched knobs! I howled when I read what Mr. Matthew said! Oh that is too too funny! Yeah, they just don’t ‘get’ what makes us tick – thankfully they tend to just shake their heads and let us go our merry way!
You did a great job. Did you put a finish over the paint? I can’t remember what you said you were going to do.
And I can’t believe it took me this long to get over here to see this post – I’m such a lazy blogger lately.

I love having the cupboards painted. I did put a Minwax poly on them. I think Travis had said get a water based and I thought I did. I realized later it was oil based and it did yellow some. If it was as easy as typing it, i would prob go back over the top cupboard doors, but it’s fine. Most people won’t even pay that much attention to the cupboards and the basement is our rec room.
I understand the not getting around in blog world!! I’ve been working here at A Delightful Glow, but haven’t been getting over to too many blogs. I love to, but can’t do everything. And I think maybe blogging is becoming old-fashioned?? 🙂 So many people like social media. Things have changed a BUNCH in the last three years. I still love blogging and blogs!!!!
