What is it that makes us love Anne so much?
This thought was teasing the corners of my brain the other day. I tossed it around and I came to this conclusion.
We love Anne, because we relate to Anne.
Or at least I do.
I love her dream world. I love her imagination. I love her dramatics and her depth of feeling. I love how she loves everything about her world and then the next moment she is crushed into the depths of despair.
I like her undying love and devotion to the people she loves. I love her passion and purpose. I even love how, once insulted, she holds a grudge.
Poor, poor Gilbert! He had no idea what a simple, single word was going to cost him.
“Carrots!”
A broken slate on his head!!! A secret curse wished upon him, I’m sure. {My own imagination coming into play here.} If looks could have killed! Scorn of all scorns! Years of airy disdain and silence. What IS IT about being ignored??
A simple word. AND all because, Gilbert wanted to get Anne’s attention. I’d say he did, wouldn’t you?
I love her indignation and impestousness. I love her rashness and remorse.
I love the way she just tells Mrs. Lynde what she thinks when Mrs. Lynde unwittingly, {but still, RUDE} insults Anne’s red hair and stomps strongly on a very sensitive subject to poor Anne.
It reminds me of this quote I came across recently, “A friend is a person who knows your sensitive spots but will never poke you there.” I don’t think Mrs. Lynde felt like much of a friend to Anne at this point in time! 🙂
I love her love of words.
I love how she sees the beauty in the world around her. I love her hope. Even though, life hadn’t been the kindest to her before she arrived at Green Gables and even though her first moments and day and night there are uncertain, she clings to hope anyway.
I love Anne, because I relate.
I’ve never tried to dye my own hair. I’ve never managed to dye it GREEN. BUT, I relate to both feelings.
I relate to the feeling of wishing something was different about the way I look or the way God made me. I relate to doing something without completely thinking through the consequences and then feeling smothered in shame and remorse.
I love Anne, because I have on occasion wanted to break a slate over someone elses’ head.
I’ve wanted to gasp in indignation at times and exclaim, “Why would you say that to me? Here’s what I think about you!”
I love Anne and I love the names she gives to her world. I want to go walk along the White Way of Delight. I love looking for the beauty. Taking time to notice the details.
Just like Anne, I search for kindred spirits and I rejoice when I find them.
Anne adds spark and zest to life. Anne embraces the day. Anne wants to throw her arms out and around and she wants to grasp the moments. Anne gets it. Anne realizes that life moves, moves, moves.
Anne notices the wildflowers and drinks them in. Anne knows how to revel in a picnic and how to set out the best dishes for guests.
Anne walks to the beat of her own drummer. The not-so-kindred spirits just don’t quite understand Anne. They shake their heads at her and they proclaim some of her ways odd, yet many of them love her still and find a fascination about her. Anne knows they don’t know what to make of her, but she makes her peace with that and she doesn’t let discouragement or naysayers get the better of her.
Anne counts her blessings.
I love Anne because I love people who inspire and encourage and bring laughter to life.
Anne is truly, truly a kindred spirit.

Oh yes! A very good reason to love Anne! 🙂
Ditto! What’s not to love?! I like how you pulled out her characteristics and related them to your own.
Thank-you! 🙂
I feel like I learn things from what I relate to and also the reverse ~ the things and situations that don’t draw me or are in my face. If that makes sense!
