An ideal day.
Oh, so many directions I could go with this.
One would involve the ocean.
One would involve a shopping day with my mother and sister.
One would involve going out for lunch with my daughter and nieces and mother and sister.
One would involve a coffee date and chocolate and laughter with a good friend.
So many good days and ideas!
I’m going to go with the beauty of ordinary and some features my ideal day would have.

It’s morning. I roll over and look at the alarm clock. It blinks its bright red numbers in my face. I snuggle back against my man, loving the warmth and feel of him next to me.
Time never waits and the red numbers wink at me. We climb out of bed and I peek out to see what sunrise display God has painted on the sky for us this morning.
It’s a little gray and clouded. I stretch and yawn and head to my closet to find what I want to wear today. I’m funny that way. I’ve read the tip that says for a jumpstart to your morning, lay out your clothes the night before. It’s a great idea in theory! It’s great for a lot of people. It doesn’t work much for me. In the evening, I’m usually tired and uninspired and ready for pajamas. NOT ready to think about what fun outfit I want for tomorrow.
But in the morning, I enjoy choosing what I want to wear. Several factors play into it, you know. The temperature. The weather. Where I’m headed and what I’m doing today.
I stare a bit and then grab a favorite red paisley patterned shirt. Perfect!
I head to the kitchen and open the crockpot lid to add cheese to the hominy I have cooking for my man’s breakfast.
He eats. I comb my hair.
I head out the door to ride along with him while he does his oil well checking duties.
It begins to rain. Softly. Gray skies hang close.
We drive back in our lane and I head to the back door. I have windows open in the house, but the rain is soft and straight down and it makes beautiful music as it pitter-patters all around.
I greet my teen son as he flips himself some pancakes. We laugh and joke a bit.
He tells me he discovered the selfie stick I snagged at a garage sale for 50 cents does work! I’d bought it to use as a gag gift anyway. We’d thought the button wasn’t working, but turns out you just have to push it differently. Three cheers for the teen! It strikes me funny. We three. My man, my son and me, we group together in the garage and try it out. I crack up laughing.
I race down the stairs hollering my daughter’s name. She looks at me with a slightly puzzled look. {She knows mom tends to be a bit crazy} I tell her the grand news! And I crack up laughing again and she laughs too.
My phone chirps and it’s a cheery good morning text from a favorite friend. She’s wishing me a beautiful morning of stillness and coffee. She knows I enjoy the rainy days.
I text her back and start some water boiling. I stir the cappucino in my Rae Dunn mug proclaiming Family on it’s front. I wrap my hands around its warmth and sink into my chair. I reach for my Bible and favorite pen. Rummage in my bag for my memory cards and study book.
I link up some blog posts and schedule some fb posts and scroll through Instagram. I open my computer browser and bring up a blog post draft and type away for a while.
My scholars work away over computers and schoolbooks.
The washer has finished its cycle and my sheets need thrown in the dryer.
The dirty dishes peek at me from the sink, but I staunchly ignore them for now. Hey, the kitchen floor is fairly clean right now!
We have some errands in town and my farmer man says he’ll take me out for lunch. I’m all too happy to accept the invitation.
Till afternoon, the sun comes out. The birds chirp and the breeze blows softly filtering in my front screen. It’s a perfect 70 degree day.
I’ll take a walk in the late afternoon. These kind of days in Kansas are so beautifully brilliant. The huge, blue sky dotted with puffy clouds against a sea of green, spring wheat! Perfection.
I call my Mother. It’s been too long since we chatted. I find my knitting and work a few rows on my dishcloth while we catch up.
I do some general tidying and run my finger down my to-do list. Always some fire trying to flare up. 🙂
After my walk, I grab my book, Laddie by Gene Stratton Porter, and head for the swing on the front porch. I curl up and read and drink in the late rays of the afternoon.
Soon, we’ll all gather in and fix a snack or heat up a few leftovers. We’ll curl up in the basement and catch up a bit on the day and laugh at Andy and Barney in an episode or two.
My pajamas will be calling me and I’ll catch the beautiful dusk of the evening outside my living room windows.
I’ll send up a heartfelt prayer for another good day. For every good day.
