Working on basement cupboards and thinking about projects and looking through some old pictures got me to thinking about something I loved at my old house. DECOR WISE anyway! And that is my old staircase.
Our old stairs were wooden, painted, hard, and steep. With no hand rail. So, you see there’s really nothing to love about any of that. I also think, they are responsible for the start of my back pain and problems and they gave my baby boy a big lump on his head one day. So, there’s nothing to love in any of that either.
A few years before we moved, I saw a couple of different ideas and pictures of painted, wooden staircases and neat things people had done. I would look at the photos every so often and think about my staircase and wonder what I could do with them. I didn’t love our stairs, but they got us to the rooms up above.
In the meantime, as I was thinking, the words and wall art became a big thing. I liked the wall art ideas, but my old house struck again and none of our walls were nice enough or smooth enough for any kind of wall art.
One day I was inspired with the idea to combine word art and my staircase. Why not choose some of the names of Jesus and put them on my stairs?! I loved the idea and promptly asked my cousin’s wife to print me some wall art. She ran a stitching and printing business, so it all came together easily for me!
I loved my stairs so, so, so much more! Even though they had given my blondie, baby boy a big lump on his head.
These aren’t the best pictures, but they’re all I could find at this time. {Ignore the dirt.} I think these pictures were taken when we were getting ready to move. {Although the stairs often needed swept, even when we weren’t moving.}
I only wished I would’ve come up with the idea when we first moved into this house, instead of a couple of years before we moved out!! Oh well, that’s part of the fun of creating home~new ideas~changes~rearranging~creating~making your space!
And as for that big lump on my baby’s head……
My 18 month-old son had a kitty blank that he loved. He would take it up and down the stairs with him. At this point he would still sit down on the steps to come down, but his blanket would be dragging out behind or around him. I KNEW he was going to end up slipping on it sometime. I just knew it. But I didn’t know what to do about it. You can’t prevent or protect your kids from everything and the blanket and the stairs were both part of our lives that really couldn’t be changed. One day as baby boy was coming down, sure enough, somehow he and kitty blank got tangled and he bumped the rest of the way down. This old staircase was hard and unforgiving and it caused a lump to swell up on his forehead. And lots of tears! Thankfully we had no broken bones!!! And it never happened again.
So, while I did love my names of Jesus on the staircase, I do not miss that staircase. My stairs at this house are easy to go up and down on and not steep at all. I still often notice how easy they are in comparison to our old stairs. I don’t think I’ll ever forget our old, steep stairs. I worried about my parents when they stayed with us, because they had to sleep in the upstairs and go up and down. I don’t remember that they ever slipped. I fell on the steps more than once and I know we did have guests slip on them. I don’t remember who, I just know that we did. I don’t think we ever had guests get hurt very much on them, thankfully. At least they didn’t tell us if they were! {We did almost freeze one of my cousin’s one time.} {Not on purpose.}
And I guess that’s life! Good and bad all mixed together. Positives and negatives in almost every situation! Things to love and things to dislike!

Even an old house that would get on your nerves a LOT has its good memories! I like your stairway today much better, too. I never did slip on that old stairway but I went extremely slow on it. Like the pics.
