We took a ground tour of the B-17. It was really neat. We got to walk through it and all around it. My kiddosย really enjoyed it and walked through it a couple of times! The ball turret was something else. A man climbed into it and was basically laying down with no room to move. He then operated the guns from this positionย located underneath the airplane. Talk about claustrophobia! Plus, it didn’t look like a veryย safe location. Being the tail gunner didn’t look too much better.

It was a very fun day and field trip!
We got to see the B-17, we went through the Liberal Air Museum, and I even snuck in a little shopping. Definitely a successful day. Plus, we got to see some beautiful, wide open spaces on our drive to Liberal and home again!
I enjoyed the pictures… my Grandpa Reese flew a B-24 in WW2. He was the bombardier and was shot down while bombing the oil fields at Ploesti. He was a prisoner of war after that. I checked Wikipedia and these two planes were often compared and made around the same time. Interesting.
I can’t imagine what it must have been like to fight in either of the World Wars. I appreciate the freedom our country has been blessed with!
