Mmmmmmmmmmm, there’s something about a bowlful of soft, homemade ice cream! When we were first married my young husband enjoyed cranking a freezer full of ice cream and we usually made ice cream several times in the summer. Seems like we don’t make it as often now. I think it’s not as enjoyable or relaxing as it once was for my man. He thinks it’s rather easy just to get a container of ice cream out of the freezer. 🙂 I do have a bowl for my Kitchen-Aid mixer that will freeze a small batch of ice cream. I used it quite a bit after my Mother gave it to me, but I’ve kind of forgotten about it. I need to use it again!
Ice cream is high on Tucker’s favorite food lists. He comes by it honestly. His paternal grandpa and his dad both really like it too.
I like ice cream, but once again, I can be a little choosy about what I like. Some ice cream is just better!! Ben & Jerry’s pretty much rocks.
This is my all-time favorite homemade ice cream recipe…You can pretty much adapt and add and make whatever flavor you want! Or just make vanilla, like my brother-in-law always does. And I will admit, basic vanilla is hard to beat and you can top it with whatever you want.
Ingredients
- 2 quarts half & half
- 1 pint whipping cream
- 1 cup chocolate instant pudding
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 T. real vanilla
- dash of salt
- 1 cup of chopped nuts, m&m's, candy etc. {optional}
- milk
Instructions
Pour half & half and cream into 6 quart ice cream freezer can.
Add pudding and whisk. {Will still be lumpy}
Add in the rest of the ingredients, except nuts/candy and extra milk.
Whisk again to combine. Doesn't need to be combined completely. The freezer will mix it.
Add nuts or candy if desired.
Add some milk if needed. JUST enough to fill the freezer can 2/3 full. {I always have trouble with overfilling it.} You don't need much and sometimes not really any, depending on flavor and add-ins.
Freeze according to your ice cream freezer directions.
ENJOY!!!
Notes
If you want vanilla ice cream, use vanilla pudding instead of chocolate.
For one of our all-time faves~add 1 cup of grapenuts to either your vanilla or chocolate base.
You can pretty much adapt this recipe. I've used more half-half and less whipping cream or vice-versa or used more milk if I didn't have enough half&half or cream. I've left out the condensed milk and I've used 1 1/2 cup sugar at times. I've added peanut butter and we've added oreos. Whatever flavor you're hungry for!
