What if…..
the days and minutes allowed us a bit more space to sit with wonder….to wander through August….to read during the sweltering afternoons and stretch the summer evenings into places to ponder?
What if….
we wrote out gratitude lists and also acknowledged the hovering anxiety lodged in our body….. became curious rather than critical…..searched for the song our very own soul is quietly pleading for?
What if….
we sat and delighted in the sprinkler spray arching high, catching the light, droplets dripping to the thirsty lawn…..we squash marshmallows between grahams with sticky fingers sharing the sweetness with people we love….we pull sun-ripened strawberries from under the leaves and pop them directly into our mouth as the flavor bursts and swirls.
What if….
we asked what it is we actually enjoy……and what if we examined the rhythm of our days and noted where we feel happy and where we keep company with sadness….and we acknowledged both along with the tension they can hold and we noticed where it is that tension tightens in our bodies.
What if….
a bunch of peonies arrives at our door……or someone we love comes through the door with wildflowers, slightly limp, clutched in their palm….or a handlettered envelope falls from the parcel of mail?
What if….
we sit cross-legged on the trampoline, green garden hose trickling a cool stream across ankles….while a playful puppy pants nearby….and the leaves dance ever-changing patterns in the topaz sky stretched tight above our heads.
What if….
we wake up tucked tight beside this person we love…..and we hit the snooze for ten more minutes…..and the automatic drip begins to waft an aromatic scent….and we sorta want to hide from the day but we get up anyway.
What if….
glorious grace was painted around us, simply waiting for our notice….and the awe of the simplicity of living surprised us with quiet sincerity, not shocking us as a bursting-from-a-closet or a forty-five-people-surprise birthday-party, but in all the best places, all the good, good ways, and eager creativeness motioned to a chair beside her?
