Mary, what did you think as you held your Son?The King, The Messiah, The Promised One,As you kissed His cheeks and counted His toes,The One who would save us from this world’s woes. How did He feel as you cuddled Him close? The One who would die, the One who has rose,As you wrapped Him up in His swaddling clothes,And He lay in the manger in sweet repose. How did he sound? Did he cry very loud? The One who would someday ascend in the cloud,As you watched Joseph hold him, did you comprehend? The great gift of love His Father had sent? What did you think of the shepherds who came?Seeking their entrance to worship the babe,What did you feel as you held Him forth? An infant-the King of both heaven and earth.Did you see the star? Had you noticed it too?As it was guiding the wisemen to you? Were you surprised by the gifts they presented?Frankincense, gold and myrrh, sweetly scented.Mary, in your heart as you pondered these things,As you patted and rocked the world’s brand-new King,Did you know a dread? Could you feel a loss?Could you already see the shadow of a cross? As the donkey was packed to Egypt to flee,Mary, oh, Mary, was it very scary?Holding and hugging your baby so tight,Traveling the weary road through the night.Feeding and bathing and loving Him so,Watching Him learn and watching Him grow,How did it feel to have Him always obey?Every direction and instruction you gave.As He helped you and loved you, as He laughed and He played,Did you think of the night He was born? Every day?Did you savor each day? Every hour? Every minute? As time moved along, and He grew along with it.Mary, oh, Mary, among women most blessed,In God your Father you put your trust,You carried His Son, He was born unto you,To save you and the world with the work He would do.Mary, my mother’s heart thinks of you now,Pondering and thinking and wondering how,The plan of our Father would exactly be,Using your Son and setting us free.Lord, make my heart willing to follow your plan,Though, so unworthy, I’ll do what I can,And as I serve you, May I say as Mary,Be done unto me all things for your glory. djf
