This time of year finds us focusing a good bit on birth, babies, and firstborns.
We think about mangers and swaddling clothes and scratchy straw.
We listen for the cry of a newborn and watch for the bright light of the star.
We wrap gifts and send greetings to people we love.
Today, my mind is musing on these three things.
People. Places. Precious Memories.
Childbirth didn’t come easily to me. I doubt too many women would call it “easy” but childbirth definitely holds a wide range of stories. I had a friend who described it as, “Not as bad as she expected.” You’d never hear those words from me!! 😉
When I became a mother, I was only one and twenty and still learning to wear the label of wife, let alone “Mama”! Still, all the same, my firstborn, a dearie daughter girl, was mine and I loved all eighteen inches of her.
Now she wasn’t born in a stable, but rather a hospital. I didn’t wrap her in swaddling clothes, but instead dressed her in a white-flowered gown and swaddled her up in a fuzzy blanket.
I knew she was a gift sent from God on that evening of her birth, but I didn’t see it through the same lenses that I look through today. Now I look back over the years and I see the little friend and person and cheerleader God wrapped up for me, in that tiny firstborn package. He gave me someone to love, places to go with her and memories to make. She made us laugh time and again. She tried my {lack of}patience and taught me more lessons than I’ve {tried} to teach her. We’ve adventured and celebrated and done a whole, whole lot of daily everyday. {Along with her brother who joined us three years later.}
God is really, really good at gift wrapping and lending His most treasured possessions here to us, because He’s a really, really good gift giver.
He’s gifted us with the gifts of each other.
The gift of today.
And the gift of memories.
So maybe I’ll say it this way, Some of the Best Things in Life are Hugging my People, Hearth and Home and Heartdrop Remember Moments.
And even more fantastic than the places we’ve been, is the place where we’re going….HOME. Someday soon to dwell with our Father, giver of good things and His most marvelous gift ~ His very own firstborn Son, our Jesus!
