This is one of our favorite recipes! It’s really hard to beat fresh, hot, buttery butterhorns! I’m hungry right now, so they sound really yummy! I enjoy making them and eating them. My children, quite literally, gobble them up. Fresh bread is definitely a favorite!
Ingredients
- 1 T. yeast
- 2 T. warm water
- 2 cups warm milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp. salt
- 3/4 cup butter, melted
- 6 cups flour, divided
Instructions
Dissolve yeast in water.
Add milk, sugar, egg, salt and 3 cups flour.
Stir in melted butter and remaining 3 cups flour.
Place in greased bowl, cover and let raise until double or place in refrigerator overnight.
Punch dough down and divide in half.
Roll each half into a circle. Cut into 12 pie-shaped pieces. Starting at wide end, roll each piece up tightly. Place on greased baking sheet making sure to tuck each point firmly underneath the butterhorn.
Let rise until double.
Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes. Brush rolls with melted butter immediately after they are done baking.
Enjoy fresh, hot butterhorns!
Notes
If you let the dough raise in the refrigerator, remove it and let it set for an hour or so before working. The dough will be stiffer to roll out since it is refrigerated.
If you want whole-wheat rolls, use part or all whole-wheat flour.
I like letting the dough raise overnight in the fridge. It makes it feel like you are getting a lot done the next morning, when you shape and bake the rolls! 🙂
Do you have a favorite dinner roll?
