I was self-checking myself out at Dillons. Well, in actuality, I was self-checking my GROCERIES out at Dillons. {And as an aside, shouldn’t we get a discount when we self-check ourselves {or rather, our groceries} out, because DOING THE JOB OURSELVES, DILLONS}.
Alright. Self-checking out my groceries. Beep. Beep, beep. Across the scanner. Nearby at the next self-checker-outer over, a Dillons employee was using the register to scan an elderly lady’s groceries for her, because the regular check-outs were all busy and the cashier offered to check the lady out at one of the self-check-outs.
Have you ever used a self-check-out? If so skip ahead. If not, you need to know this detail.
If you have trouble or something isn’t scanning correctly or you place your hand on the bagging area which is super sensitive because it calculates weight or you just need help of any general kind, the computer will tell you in an automated voice, “An attendant has been notified to assist you.”
So, I’m dum-de-dum, scanning away, placing my items in bags and from the neighboring self-check-out, run by the DILLONS CASHIER, I hear “An attendant has been notified to assist you.” Then I heard it again. And again. It totally struck me funny. Very funny.
How are we as mere customers, who-just-want-to-get-our-groceries and go home, going to possess the capability to check ourselves out when the Dillons employee needs assistance?? 😉 😉 HOW, I say???
I haven’t totally decided what I think of self-checkouts. I don’t know if I think they are handy or annoying. Might depend on the given day. I’m not sure they’re any faster, except it may FEEL that way because you are DOING something instead of standing in line.
And I know Dillons is breathlessly awaiting my opinion on the matter.
But they may just have to wait. Especially if an attendant has been notified to assist me!
How ’bout you? Do you have an opinion on self-checkouts?
I WILL have to say that I totally love it when I happen to shop at Dillons on a day when they decide to give out roses as customer appreciation. I’ve been there a couple of times within the last year and they were doing this.
At the end of the register there was a big bucket of long stem roses. They asked me if I would like a rose as a customer appreciation and I very promptly said “Yes! And thank-you very much!”
I love fresh flowers. Should you happen to offer me a long stem rose, I will not turn you down.
And should you offer your assistance in grocery-checking-out, I may or may not accept. I’ll notify you when I decide.

How amusing. I do use the self checkouts at some stores, but I avoid the ones at Walmart if they’re busy. They are slower than the usual check out options when crowded. Still don’t entirely understand that.
That is interesting! Perhaps they are slower because you are doing everything yourself. I’ve watched at Dillons and I don’t think either that they are faster. If there is a line at the register run by the cashier and I only have a few items, then I think I might get done a little faster at a self-checkout.
I LOVE self checkouts. I want to do it myself and bag things MY way thank you very much! And I guarantee you I get out of there faster too! Heehee!!
YOU would be able to get all done faster! I guarantee it! Better not let them watch you; they’ll try to keep you and put you to work. Tee-hee! 🙂
