September…..croons a lilting lullaby of lowering temps and the easing of earth toward dormancy and quiet cozying in…..
September graced us with end-of-summer blooms and the beginning of mums and pansies; ushered in bumpy pumpkins and every color of orange on the color wheel…..
Coffee becomes more fragrant and maple and cinnamon and apple and nutmeg take the stage….
September breathes in deeply, throws head back with eyes closed, basking in the golden hour, waiting in the darkening dusk to catch the orb of silver spin at moonrise joining the star-studded canvas of inky sky…..
Pies and apple cake and monster cookies and fresh-baked bread and bran muffins are the aroma of the season as the oven thrums a happy tune humming along with this rhythm of slowing and savoring….
September is a song….a melody of meditation…..
I mow the lawn and watch the leaves; notice the hummingbirds and fill the feeders…..the roses need trimming and the hibiscus begin their wind-down…..the clematis bursts forth in a cloud of white beauty, a last hurrah…..the soil in the fields is becoming a seedbed to welcome and blanket all the tiny kernels of wheat…..we want to plant a tree in the backyard and the weeds continue to pop up here and there and in all the corners…..
I feel the rush of time as August and September have flown past in a rush of whirling calendar pages…..the lists I scrawled at the end of July have very little checked off……..
Rain drip-drops outside the open screen door as I string words together. A few messages firework across the top of my screen and the ice rattles into the bin in the freezer.
To everything there is a season. In every season there is pain and pleasure, difficulty and delight, grief and goodness.
Adieu, September, adieu. For all you bring to us, gratitude.
