As my days and weeks move forward and form months and years, I’ve noticed there is always change.
In different seasons and stages in life, our schedules and activities have flexed and changed.
When I had babies and toddlers, the hour after lunch involved picking up toys, choosing and reading favorite books, rocking and singing and taking naps. At times, this Mama was almost asleep before the babies.
As my small people grew nap time changed to rest time.
As school age came, things like laundry schedule and morning schedule changed and we found ourselves spending time learning letters and sounding out words.
In this season of my life, we have a couple of routines I want to make note of, because I know they will quietly change and slip away and I will probably miss their exit. One day I will look up and notice that we are into a new routine.
Right now lunchtime usually finds my children gathering in the kitchen with me. They help with food or finishing up food. They set the table, put things away, and work on dishes. They pull things out of the fridge or slice potatoes. They fill glasses with ice and tea and get out napkins from the drawer. I like this time and the moments with them. Plus, they are wonderful help!! 🙂 And Home Ec and Life Skill Lessons all rolled into one!
When my children were younger we had a season, for a while, where we would all fold laundry together. Right now my children do almost all of the laundry folding. Most often they take on this task right after lunch. If we are busy for a day or two and the laundry is piled up, waiting, they set up the computer and listen to Adventures in Odyssey. I appreciate how much help it is to have the laundry folded and put away!
Small things, but simple routines that make me glad.
What have been some of your favorite routines and schedules?
