A Prayer For the Ones Carrying Suffering and Sorrow
Jesus, thank you that you are not distantly removed from suffering. Thank you that you meet us in our suffering. You endured suffering to share in our heartache. Jesus, you bottle tears.
You soothe fears. Your comfort and compassion relentlessly carries us through the quicksand. Endless heartache is not the lot of those who mourn. You sat in a crowd, on a mountain in Israel overlooking the Sea of Galilee, and you told the mourners they would be comforted. Our hearts may be broken and breaking, but you come in and you bind them up.
Jesus, you were despised. Held in low esteem.
You were rejected. Pain and suffering were familiar. You didn’t hold degrees or pedigrees. Instead, you held space for the hurting. You held bread and you broke it for the hungry.
You came as Light to fulfill that those who dwelt in darkness had been illuminated with a great Light.
For people dwelling in the shadow of death, Light had dawned.
Jesus, you empathize with our crushed spirits and calm anxious trepidation.
You bring life. You show us how to hold joy and sorrow, co-mingled. You did this in your life and in your death.
Your resurrection raised us anew, righted the way.
Sometimes all our aching hearts can do is hang onto the slenderest strand of hope and remember we have a God who sees.
In Your Name Always, Jesus.
Amen and Amen
Hebrews 4:14-16 ~
“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
