One of the first thing I noticed about gluten-free recipes was the variety of flours.
Rice flour.
Brown rice flour.
Coconut flour.
Almondmeal.
Flaxseed.
Sweet Rice.
Tapioca Flour.
Teff Flour.
I started a collection of different flours and I had a couple of recipes that called for Teff flour.
Thing is I wasn’t finding Teff flour anywhere.
Our local Dillons and Wal-Mart neither one carried it.
I had enough recipes and enough other flours, I let it go after I looked for it a couple of times.
One morning an email landed in my inbox asking if I was interested in trying Brown Teff Flour from Tenera Grains.
Why, yes!!! I’d love to try it!
Claire and I emailed back and forth a few times and soon a bag of Teff flour was making it’s bumpy journey along the roads and routes of the postal service from Michigan to Kansas!
{Read Tenera Grains’ story about their farm right here.}
Claire also sent me a recipe to try and I’m sharing it with you, so you can whip up a delicious chocolate brownie pie for yourself!
The original recipe was for a loaf, but I changed things up and placed my batter into a pie plate so I could have a brownie pie!

Tenera Grains offers Ivory Teff Flour and Brown Teff Flour.
Here’s a quote from their site about pairing the Brown Teff Flour with chocolate ~
“The nutty, brown Teff pairs well with chocolate especially in quick breads like the chocolate loaf.”
There’s a recipe here for Ivory Teff Blondies that sounds delicous, too!
It’s ready to slide into the oven!
We let it cool a little, when it came back out and then I sliced it and served up delicious chocolatey pieces with melty chips!
It would be great with vanilla bean ice cream. We were out of ice cream when I made this, so we did not eat it with ice cream. So sad. 🙂
Mmmmm……doesn’t it look homey? It tasted homey, too! Surely the taste of chocolate and the warmth of home are synonymous! 🙂
Here’s a close-up look at the Brown Teff Flour. It’s very finely ground and has a warm, pretty color!
I enjoyed trying it. The recipe is tucked neatly into my three-ring binder of Gluten Free Recipes.
Actually, it may not be all that neat. It may be stuck in.
Either way, it is in my binder ready for another day when I want to whip out something chocolate!
My Teff flour is safely tucked away with my flour collection. Ready and waiting for more recipes calling for Teff flour!
Browse Tenera Grains products here if you’re in the market for a lovely Teff Flour! And your local grocers don’t carry it either!
THANK-YOU so much to Tenera Grains for sharing their flour with me!
