The branches bob, nod, rustle.
Snow lays in powdered blankets accentuating green needles. Pinecones poke their heads above this winter coat.
The pines spread their graceful skirts along the snowy path.
A squirrel scampers around the trunk and a quick flash of cardinal red appears above our heads.
In winter landscape or summer bloom, evergreens stand steady.
They teach us about anchored abiding.
One definition for evergreen tells us this ~
“Evergreen: universally and continually relevant : not limited in applicability to a particular event or date.”
Relevance speaks of abiding.
Abiding teaches endurance.
And in enduring we find a going beyond a particular event or date.
Evergreens aren’t necessarily showy like fruit trees in bloom or graceful willows bowing branches above a rippling lake.
They stretch tall, right up toward the sky.
They sing glory.
Lift faces, branches ever toward the light.
There is beauty in endurance. This is the power of perseverance. The song steadfastness sings.
And in winters of waiting, beneath the snow, the cultivation of character is forming, forming in us, making us, bringing it to pass.
“Indeed you will go out with joy; you will be led along in peace; the mountains and hills will give a joyful shout before you, and all the trees in the field will clap their hands.” ~ Isaiah 55:12
