Back at the beginning of May, for our anniversary, I share these words from our marriage ceremony on Instagram. I think in my head that I will share them here too. The days continue and the clock counts as they always do and always will as long as this earth pulses on its axis.
I blog other stuff and do dishes and pick up and put away and send postcards and finish a Bible study and pay bills and take walks and run errands and laugh when my husband cracks a joke and laugh some more at the funny things my son comes up with and I cut out box tops and put them on my daughter’s desk and I put away her flashlight and I go with her to see the kittens and I search the house for the bug spray I know we have. I put chlorine in the pool and I water flowerpots and I sit on my porch swing. I take some pictures and I write some blogposts and I knit dishcloths and make some pom-poms. I bake a cake and I make pancakes and egg casseroles and I go to some appointments. I sigh and I take some ibuprofen and I make jam and I grill chicken. I weed the corn in the garden and watch the wheat change from green to golden. I drink in every beautiful sky and I light candles. I hold babies and hug nieces and hang laundry. I check the tomatoes and fold clothes and wipe off counters.
And one day I do find myself with hands on my laptop keyboard. I click and peck and I bring these words here to share with you and bring inspiration to the details of your life.
These words mean so much more now at nineteen years than they did on our wedding day. We’ve lived them out and we know now about this thing called marriage. We stood on the threshhold then. Now we look back and forward too!
My Dad said in our ceremony ~
The love of God is bigger than the skies over Kansas. It is marriage’s greatest blessing. Without it marriages die or at best are sacrificed on the altar of mediocrity.
But with it your marriage will thrive because you are true friends rejoicing in the supreme knowledge that God is love. This love reaches down into life in its most ordinary forms. It helps you perform the menial tasks of life.
Duty can make you do things well, but love will make you do them beautifully. It is a blessing when a husband after a long days labor feels eager to return home because he feels especially welcome there. He has a sense of joy in knowing that what he is working for is being appreciated and he can enter through those brave wooden doors of home and find a sanctuary where happiness reigns because love dwells there. It is as though God has left His breath upon the walls because the fragrance of true friendship is there.
Love can relish the simple things that make up living together. Errands run, floors swept, machinery fixed, food prepared, clothes washed, fields planted, work loads accomplished; provider and help meet laboring together and for each other. It will be a lot of ordinary living but in this, marriage is a great way to reflect and share the love of God.
