Let’s make applesauce! It is so nice to have applesauce in the freezer and it is really hard to beat fresh applesauce to eat. Yummy!
The first thing you need for making applesauce is………….drumroll please…………APPLES!!!
You can buy apples, grow apples, or have thoughtful neighbors who give you apples! Where ever they come from, you will need apples.
I’m very thankful for our kind neighbors who shared their abundance of apples with us. I knew my applesauce was getting low and had thought I should check about getting apples to make sauce. Just a couple of days later my neighbor called and offered us apples. Truly a blessing from God! We went over one evening and picked apples. My kiddos thought it was pretty fun. Tucker spent a good bit of time picking and choosing and sorting and wanted to keep “his apples” separated from the rest. He wasn’t overly impressed when I said I was going to make applesauce. He wanted to keep the apples to eat. I don’t know if he really thought we would be able to just eat the amount of apples we brought home. 🙂 He sorted his out in bags and they are residing in the refrigerator to just eat! He did tell me later I could use some of his. And I think some of them probably will end up being chopped up for apple goodie and apple cake recipes.
Next you need a stove or a microwave and a cooking pan or a fire and a kettle. {I’ve never tried using a fire and a kettle myself.}
You also need a knife or apple slicer. Chop or slice your apples in preparation for cooking. Fill your cooking pan and add a little water to keep them from sticking. Cook till tender!
Now you are ready to “sauce” the apples. I have a handy-dandy attachment for my Kitchen-Aid mixer. Several couples gave us a Kitchen-Aid attachment pack for our wedding gift. I’ve appreciated it many times over our fifteen years of homemaking!
In the cooked apples go, plunge them through, and voilà, applesauce!!
Add sugar till you reach the sweetness and taste you and your family prefer!
I remember helping my mom make applesauce when I was young. She had a Victorio and I thought it was the best thing ever to get to run the wooden plunger while my mom cranked the Victorio.
Put your applesauce in freezer boxes and you’re good to go! You could home can if you’d rather. I have before, but if I have freezer room I’d rather freeze it.
I also sometimes put my applesauce through the blender for a really smooth sauce. This year I ended up blending all of it. It turned out really yummy! I think we will gobble it up.
Do you make applesauce and do you have a favorite apple for turning into sauce?

I like Macs for sauce but I like a thicker sauce. Around here a lot of people use transparents and blend it and that just reminds me of baby food – blech. I think it’s just because I didn’t grow up eating it that way. I have the Kitchen Aid attachment too but I think it almost blends it too much for my taste. The family doesn’t seem to mind. I like Macs because I don’t have to add any sugar. But with the prices this year I don’t think I’ll be making any 🙁

My mom blended our applesauce and I still like it that way! I love the differences in people…when you said that the Kitchen Aid attachment blends it almost too much for your taste, I was thinking, “Really? Wow, I think it’s too thick sometimes!” lol!

I don’t know for sure what these apples were, but the sauce is sure yummy! Don’t know if I’ve ever had Courtland.

I made applesauce this year, but then I promptly turned it into apple butter! For some reason, we don’t eat much applesauce.
Jason’s aunt has several fruit trees that he takes care of so we always have plenty of apples. We don’t know what kind they are, but they are yummy 🙂

That’s pretty handy to have fruit trees readily accessible to you! I don’t know for sure what kind of apples these were either, but the sauce is delish!
We apparently don’t eat a lot of applebutter, because I still have some that I made a couple years ago!

At one time I thought I had to have Transparent apples to make sauce, then I tried Summer Rambo and never looked back at Transparent! I haven’t made it for a few years but still have some in my freezer which tells you that I no longer feed as many people as I used to.

Your applesauce was yummy this summer when we were there!

The big apple around here is the honeycrisp, but I prefer to dip those in caramel 🙂 I prefer a gala for applesauce and really, there isn’t a better smell in the house than making a batch! I’ve always used my crockpot for some reason…and I like cinnamon in mine if I’m going to eat it plain, but I usually bake with it…..
growing up I remember my grandma squeezing lemon in her applesauce so it wouldn’t turn brown. but she canned…does it turn brown in the freezer? I’ve never thought to freeze it! I’m going to try that this year–thank you!

I like Gala to eat, but have never tried them for sauce.
Do you cook the apples in your crockpot? How long? A friend just mentioned that she used her electric roaster turned low overnight. I’m thinking these are both good ideas, because you could have a lot of apples ready to process at once.
I’ve dipped apple slices in lemon juice before to prevent browning. Never used it in applesauce though. I don’t think mine really changes colors in the freezer or gets brown, but I probably don’t notice things like that like some people would. I don’t really remember it changing a lot when I canned it either, but it has been a while since I canned instead of froze! 🙂
