I do not know how Thanksgiving is approaching already! It is totally sneaking in. Of course, I’ve felt that way all year. A year ago, we were awaiting the finalization on everything for our house. Pretty soon we will have lived in it a year! I am always amazed at how much happens, in life, in the span of a year. Things have a way of happening that we never expect or of going in a direction we totally did not see coming.
Anyway, I digress. With Thanksgiving bearing down upon us, I thought I’d share a couple of yummy recipes for dressing. Or stuffing. What name do you call it by? There’s always the old joke that the first helping is dressing, the second helping is filling, and the third helping is stuffing!
This first recipe came from my Aunt Donna. She was my dad’s brother’s wife and she died from cancer eleven years ago. I can not believe it has been that long. My dad and his brother are the only kiddos in their family, so she was my only aunt on my dad’s side. She was a very fun and special person! She seemed to always be smiling and had a very positive outlook on life. She got headaches almost everyday, but you never would’ve known it. She and my uncle were never able to have children, but they certainly enjoyed each other and they enjoyed life. They were blessed to be able to travel a good bit and visited Israel several times. I would have loved for my children to have been able to know her.
This recipe is baked in the crockpot and is yummy and moist…and easy! Always a bonus!
Ingredients
- Crockpot Dressing
- For a 4 quart crockpot
- 1 cup butter, melted
- 2 cups chopped celery
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1 tsp poultry seasoning
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- 1/2 tsp sage
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp thyme
- 15 cups dry bread cubes
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 2 eggs, slightly beaten
- Combine in 4 quart crockpot.
- Cook on high 45 minutes. And then on low for 6 hours.
- Do not stir.
- Note: If you don’t have dry bread cubes, reduce the broth by 1 cup.
- My note: I’ve never used as much onion, because my family isn’t crazy about it.
Now, here are the amounts to use for a 6 quart crockpot. I had them written on the side of my recipe, so I thought I’d include that too, and save you burning mental power. 😉
Ingredients
- Crockpot Dressing
- For a 6 Quart Crockpot
- 1 1/2 cups butter
- 3 cups chopped celery
- 1 1/2 cups chopped onion
- 1 1/2 tsp. poultry seasoning
- 3/4 tsp. pepper
- 3/4 tsp. sage
- 2 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 tsp thyme
- 22 1/2 cups dry bread cubes
- 6 cups chicken broth
- 3 eggs
- Combine in 6 quart crockpot.
- Cook on high 45 minutes. And then on low for 6 hours.
- Do not stir.
- My note: I can't remember if I cooked it any longer for a 6 quart crockpot or not. I don't think it would make a very big difference. I love the versatility of a crockpot, because it will generally hold things or you can turn it up and bake something a little quicker if you need to.
Then I have another recipe that I think is super yummy! When you see the ingredients, you’ll agree. I’m tempted to try a combination of the recipes and try it in the crockpot.
Ingredients
- Thanksgiving Dressing
- 1 (1 1/4 lb.) loaf bread, plus 4 slices, dried and cubed
- 3 cups celery, chopped
- 1 cup onion, chopped
- 1/2 cup butter
- 4 eggs, beaten
- 1 T. salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- 1 can cream of chicken soup
- 2 cans chicken broth
- 1 cup milk
- 2 cups chicken, cooked and diced
- 1 pkg Stovetop dressing mix for seasoning or add your own seasoning
- Saute celery and onion in butter. Place bread cubes in a bowl and add all ingredients. Mix to combine and put in a 9x13 baking dish and an 8x8 baking dish.
- Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.
- My note: I often freeze the 8x8 for another time. This recipe originally called for only a 9x13, but it always ended up too full. Once again, I don't use nearly as much onion. This is a yummy, moist dressing!
Do you have a favorite recipe for dressing…or is it stuffing?

I don’t like dressing or stuffing or whatever you want to call it! My poor husband loves it all and is always very excited to get some on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
We’re just the opposite. I love it, but my husband isn’t completely fond of it. 🙂
I always thought it was stuffing if it was in the bird but dressing if served on the side? I like that little saying – cute. I remember my mom’s two large Fix & Mix tupperware bowls filled with torn cornbread & white bread drying out on the counter for days before Thanksgiving. Sad to say the people who eat dressing in this house all prefer Stove Top, both he flavor and texture. I might give your last recipe a go!
I had some of the same thoughts on the whole name thing. 🙂 It makes sense to call it stuffing when it’s been “stuffed” in the turkey!
I’ve never tried cornbread in my dressing. Sounds yummy! I’ve seen cornbread Stovetop mixes.
I really like the pieces of chicken in the second recipe. And of course the soup and milk give it a good and moist texture.
Yummy! I love that these are for the crockpot! Whoohoo!! I found you via A Proverbs 31 Wife and will be following along! 🙂
Thanks for coming by! 🙂
It is really nice to have something that can go in a crockpot when fixing a big menu like Thanksgiving dinner!
I like dressing. When it becomes filling and then stuffing, not so good! Aunt Donna! Still miss her. She was a very special person and the sunshine in our King family. Your crockpot dressing is delicious and I would love to be at your table to help eat it on Thanksgiving Day. I plan to stuff the turkey with the recipe I’ve used for along time. It’s from Betty Crocker Cookbook and very yummy.
I like that recipe too and stuffing it in the turkey makes it very yummy!
I really can’t believe how long it’s been since we were blessed to have Aunt Donna here.
LOVE dressing – or stuffing – I don’t care what you call it just please make sure you serve some with a turkey dinner! And yes, please hold back on the onion – a good cook doesn’t have to smother everything in onion!
I miss Aunt Donna too. She would have had such fun with our kids – I can just see her laughing at how much they acted like their mothers!!!
I love dressing too! And I love it when you guys are here at Thanksgiving, because I’m the only one that really, really likes dressing and cranberry salad. So it seems silly to make these big ole recipes just for me! But you can’t have Thanksgiving dinner without them! 🙂 I think last year I made a smallish version of the cranberry salad.
Aunt Donna would’ve enjoyed the kiddos. I can see her laughing too. She had a really great laugh! I think the kids are mostly like their fathers though. 😉
HO!HO!HO! to that last remark, Deborah! I sure see a lot in your kiddos of the two little girls who used to live around here!!! Glad you put the smiley face.
Your first and second sound like our family recipe. We always put it in the oven because some like it soft (the middle), but others like the crispy parts (the edges). I do not like any sausage or apples, or nuts, or oysters etc…. at least not on Thanksgiving.
Yep, I don’t really like anything “extra” in the dressing! 🙂 I like the crispy and the soft! Dressing is one of my favorites at Thanksgiving dinner!
I may have to make them all and have a “taste off!” yummy! thanks for linking up with us over at Country Fair Blog Party! You are such a great supporter of bloggers!
