Grocery Aisles
The grocery aisles are abuzz with shoppers shuffling carts, choosing assorted groceries, readying to create family recipes for a Thanksgiving feast.
Our menus aren’t identical, yet also similar.
It’s a high percentage that may include, but not limited to, turkey, gravy with mashed potatoes of course, dressing or stuffing, dinner rolls, green beans and/or sweet potatoes, cranberry salad, and yes, definitely, pie.
It’s a proximity of gratitude.
A grace of celebration.
The bloom of tradition and a rhythm of pausing.
It’s a liturgy of leaning in and letting gratitude stick to everything like glitter.
The glorious delight of purposeful thanksgiving.
The grocery checkers chat with the shoppers, scanning, scanning, scanning. Celery and oranges. Cranberries and whipping cream. Pumpkin and cinnamon.
A slight woman, gray streaking her auburn hair, bags our items. Thanks us for coming in. She and the checker both bid us a very good Thanksgiving as we repeat the wish back to them.
Goodwill offered to others with grateful hearts. This is the gift of giving thanks and the gift of thanksgiving.

A Liturgy of All That Makes Us Human
We say thank you.
Thank you Jesus for all that is beauty and taste and goodness and grace.
Thank you for the places we feel loved and the tables where we can sit as ourselves.
Thank you for amazing wonder found in the smallest places, the places where the light gets in despite the darkest darkness.
Thank you for peace in body, mind, and soul.
Thank you Jesus for loving us in the realest of ways, even when we walk away, walk the wrong way.
Thank you for eyes to open to catch the wonder, hands to cup the coffee cup, lungs to breathe in deep in our bodies as life rises and falls.
Thank you for music and merriness and multitudes of mercies.
Thank you for home and hope and fire in the hearthstones.
Thank you for people who make us laugh and for the ones who hold our tears.
Thank you for the ring bearers and the beauty bringers as we wind our way through our own Rivendells and limp along toward Mordor.
Thank you for the faces we wear and the safe spaces needed- provided- where we get to show up as we are.
Thank you for the people willing to cheer us on despite all kinds of chaos. The ones who rescue; the ones who repair. The organizers and empathizers.
Thank you for a way forward in the Way Himself.
Thank you for words to give praise back to the Word Himself.
Thank you for the gift of gratitude to give to the Giver of all good gifts.
Thank you for dwelling with us, delighting in us.
Truly.
Forever and Amen.
